10 Tips to Improve Your Smile During National Smile Month

national smile month

This National Smile Month, we’re here with advice for you to keep your smile healthy. How many of these tips do you already follow? Where could you improve?

Follow these tips and challenge yourself to make a change for the better. Your smile will show the difference.

  1. Practice good oral hygiene, including brushing twice and flossing once a day. One of the most important things you can do for your oral health only takes a few minutes a day. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day (morning and night) and flossing at least once a day help clean the surfaces and areas between your teeth, keeping your smile healthy and cavity-free.
  2. Choose toothpaste and mouthwash with fluoride. According to the American Dental Association, fluoride makes tooth enamel stronger and can even reverse early tooth decay. To make the most of your daily oral health routine, use a toothpaste with fluoride. You can also try a fluoride mouthwash to rinse your teeth after brushing.
  3. Replace your toothbrush often. Your toothbrush becomes less effective as the bristles fray. Replace your toothbrush every three months, or sooner if you have been sick or begin to see significant wear.
  4. Visit the dentist regularly. While proper oral care at home is key to a healthy smile, regular dental visits are also vital. Preventive dental visits can help stop the development of cavity-causing plaque, and your dentist can treat any problems while they are still relatively minor. Your dentist can also spot symptoms of diseases that may impact your overall health. TruAssure’s individual and family plans cover three dental cleanings per year, more than the standard two, so you have every reason to make your appointment today.
  5. Quit tobacco. One of the most negative health impacts of smoking or chewing tobacco is that it increases your risk for oral cancer. Even for smokers who do not develop cancer, tobacco stains the teeth and increases the risk for gum disease. Commit to quitting — your smile will thank you.
  6. Eat nutrient-rich foods. A balanced diet that is rich in vitamins and minerals, like those found in fresh fruit and vegetables, can help keep teeth and gums healthy. Calcium-rich foods like milk and leafy greens are also important for maintaining a healthy smile as calcium builds strong teeth and bones.
  7. Avoid sugary foods. While we all love a sweet treat now and then, sugar is a major contributing factor in the development of cavities. Whenever you can, choose a lower-sugar substitute, like fruit with a dollop of whipped cream instead of an ice cream sundae.
  8. Drink more water. Choose water over juice, soda or sports drinks that are high in cavity-causing sugar. Water is always the best choice to stay hydrated. In addition, drinking fluoridated water can strengthen teeth and help prevent cavities.
  9. Wear a mouthguard. Protect your teeth and mouth from injuries by always wearing a mouthguard when playing contact sports.
  10. Sign up for dental insurance. According to the National Association of Dental Plans 2016 Dental Health and Benefits survey, people with dental insurance are 20 percent more likely to go to the dentist once every six months than those without it. TruAssure offers several individual and family plans to meet your needs. Prioritize the health of your smile and sign up for dental insurance today.
