September is Healthy Aging Month

Healthy Aging Month is observed during the month of September and is meant to raise awareness of the physical and mental health of older adults and serve as a reminder that as we age, our minds and bodies change. It is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle to help deal with those changes and to help prevent some common age-related health problems.

You can take a proactive approach to aging by adopting healthy habits and behaviors, practicing preventive care, and staying connected to friends and family. Consider practicing the tips below to help you stay active and independent as you age.

Eat and drink healthy

Dietary needs shift as you age and a healthy, well-balanced eating plan includes nutritious foods that are low in cholesterol, fat, and artificial ingredients. You should also drink plenty of fluoridated tap water to help keep hydrated.

Adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet is a great way to benefit your oral and overall health.

  • Apples are crunchy and high in fiber, which helps stimulate saliva production and can help cleanse your teeth and gums.
  • Carrots are rich in vitamin A and fiber, which can help strengthen your gums and promote a healthy smile.
  • Celery’s fibrous texture encourages chewing and increases saliva production, aiding in removing food particles and bacteria.
  • Broccoli is a good source of vitamins C and K, which can help support healthy gums and maintain oral health.
  • Strawberries contain malic acid, a natural teeth whitener, but be sure to rinse your mouth after eating them, as they contain natural sugars that can be harmful in excess.
  • Spinach is rich in iron, which is crucial for maintaining healthy oral tissues and preventing oral sores.
  • Sweet Potatoes are an excellent source of vitamin A, essential for maintaining your mouth’s health and supporting your smile.

Move more, sit less

Staying active can help you prevent, delay, and manage chronic diseases, improve balance and stamina, reduce the risk of falling and improve brain health. Aim for moderate physical activity like walking for 30 minutes each day.

Be aware of changes in brain health

World Alzheimer’s Month is also observed every September to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disorder that affects memory, thinking, and behavior and is the most common cause of dementia. As the disease progresses, individuals with Alzheimer’s may have difficulty remembering to brush their teeth regularly, leading to poor oral hygiene.

Promoting good oral health in individuals with Alzheimer’s enhances their quality of life and can help reduce the risk of oral infections, pain, and other dental issues that may exacerbate their overall health condition.

Remember, a balanced diet, along with good oral hygiene practices, such as regular brushing, flossing, and preventive dental and vision check-ups can contribute to excellent oral and overall health as you age. Additionally, getting a memory screening is also strongly encouraged for healthy aging.

Preventive check-ups help doctors catch chronic diseases early and can help patients reduce risk factors for disease, such as high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. In some cases, regular check-ups have been linked to improved quality of life and increased feelings of wellness.
